10.05. Lecture Critical minerals for the fight against climate change

We are starting the second event of our five-part series “Global and Development Issues in Resource Justice”. The second lecture will take place on 10.05.2022 at 19:45.  This lecture series is a cooperation project with Sächsische Entwicklungspolitische Bildungstage (SEBIT) and Oscar Choque – expert promoter for resource policy, development and migration and member of AYNI Verein für Ressorcengerechtigkeit e.V.

Our speaker Michael Schmidt from the  Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (BGR) and the German Mineral Resources Agency (DERA) will give an overview of their fields of action. With the spread of low-carbon energy technologies, the demand for energy-use metals such as lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel and copper is increasing. Increasing extraction volumes will further increase the impact on people and the environment in mining areas. An overview of the environmental and social impacts on commodity-producing countries from the perspective of a government agency is provided. The German economy is dependent on primary raw materials. What are the German and European strategies to secure raw material procurement?
