Project Description: Mineral deposits in Colombia and improvements of their extraction and remediation.
Description of project and work placement, experimental techniques and possible tasks to be assigned to the research assistant
Colombia is rich in commodities like gold, emeralds, platinum, nickel, industrial minerals, ornamental stones, oil, coal and gas, but also strategic or critical elements (Ni, Ta, REE, Sn, W, etc.) are of increasing interest. Our research group GEGEMA Grupo de Estudios en Geología Económica y Mineralogía Aplicada www.gegeunal.org or http://ciencias.bogota.unal.edu.co/gruposdeinvestigacion/gegema/ is working about most of them for a better understanding of their genesis, content, mineralization processes, ages, mining and remediation. Knowledge about them will become still more important in post-COVID-19 reconstruction.
Deposits in pegmatites and other magmatic to hydrothermal environments as well as their secondary enrichment in recent and fossil placer deposits are of interest. In continuation of our research project “Evaluation of strategic minerals, industrial minerals, gems and construction materials and the environmental and social impact of their possible mining in the Llanos Region” a lot of new projects are emerging which are more important in the framework of the ongoing peace process in Colombia. Among them are Au-Pd-W hydrothermal deposits and the support of their mining by miners’ associations in Taraira and eventually other areas, as well as gold, platinum, emeralds, building materials including clays and dimension stones. Also the characterization of archaeological wall paintings and lithic material and its conservation especially in Tierradentro together with the Colombian Institute of Archaeology ICANH are important topics. Also we are researching about environmental factors like NORM affecting water quality of the Lower Magdalena River due to enhanced hydrocarbon extraction. One doctoral student finished, 2 others are in march in these projects, as well as a lot of MSc. and BSc theses.
The student assistant should, depending on his/her level of knowledge and interest, help in the literature research, cartography and interpretation (GIS), sample preparation, sediment and hard-rock investigation, thin and reflected light-section elaboration and interpretation, as well as measurements with a handheld XRF device (Bruker-AXS-Tracer-III-V), SEM, TEM, and – very welcomed – the new Bruker D8 Advance Eco diffractometer (students with good knowledge in this instrument may have an advantage in the selection process). Also experience in radiogenic dating, water analysis, metallurgy is welcome.
Eventually, participation in field trips and sampling in the study areas will be possible, depending e.g. on the pandemic evolution. Interdisciplinary work ability is an advantage.
You are invited to give public talks about on-going theses or other activities and special knowledges, or short courses, which helped mutually to strengthen the interaction, contacts, and international cooperation as also expressed in the ~30 members Bogota Student Chapter of the SGA www.e-sga.org.
The Universidad Nacional de Colombia (www.unal.edu.co) in Bogotá, with over 30,000 students, is the largest public University in the country. The personal security situation for Germans is usually unproblematic, if relevant rules are not grossly violated. Spanish – or at least good English- knowledge is essential.
The support of the University for International Guests usually is exemplary, and accommodation is not problematic.
