Students from the field of geosciences meet twice a year for the Federal Student Representatives Conference, BuFaTa for short, in order to exchange ideas during workshops, lectures and excursions about other study locations, current research projects or relevant topics in the field of the work of the student representatives. The BuFaTa is held each semester in a different city and at a different university. Four students from Faculty 3 took part in the 77th BuFaTa in Heidelberg from 6 to 10 November.
On the first evening we got to know the almost 100 participants of the other universities from all over Germany as well as a team from Austria.
In addition to a sightseeing tour through Heidelberg’s old town and a pub rally, excursions to the Schwäbische Alb, the Oberrheingraben, the Nussloch Muschelkalk quarry, the Max Planck Institute in Mainz and a hike around Heidelberg were offered to explore the geology and conditions of the region.
Nevertheless, the main focus of the event was on the workshops and plenums, in which current topics such as student drivers of excursion buses, inclusion in the study of geosciences, geodiversity, overcoming stress and many more were discussed. Thus, impressions of other locations could be gained and the Freiberg location could also be presented.
BuFaTa is supported and carried by GeStEIN e.V. (Geoscientific Student Experience & Interest Network). Every year, the GeStEIN is looking for a new venue for the BuFaTa. Thus the coming BuFaTa will be held from 13 to 17 May in Halle.
We thank the organizers for interesting and exciting five days in Heidelberg and look forward to the BuFaTa in Halle.
The topic BuFaTa has aroused your interest and you could imagine to take part in a BuFaTa of the geosciences? Then just contact us or write an email: firstname.lastname@example.org

The Federal Republic of Tatarstan owns the largest oil field in Russia. Accordingly, the Kazan Federal University (KFU) is well equipped. The university has about 40 000 students. It currently ranks 8th among the top 10 universities in Russia and is well connected worldwide. The Institute of Geology is equipped to the latest standards – from lecture halls and laboratories to internship rooms. The TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the institute’s stratigraphy department have a joint research programme on stratigraphy and palaeontology of potentially hydrocarbon-bearing units (i.e. from Cambrian to Tertiary) in which students are directly involved. The double MSc agreement is also based on this. Students who participate receive a Master’s certificate from both TUBAF and KFU. This is of course an advantage when looking for a good job after your studies.
Prof. Ratschbacher, Tectonics, is currently looking for students who would like to start working with Kazan on thermochronometry.
Among the geotechnical engineers, Prof. Amro is interested in a similar double MSc program with Kazan.
Professor Schneider will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
