About the IAM

The demand for raw materials is constantly growing!

At the Institute of Mineral Processing Machines (IAM) of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, we do research on intelligent and innovative solutions to meet it – in a sustainable and energy-efficient way!

The need for raw materials is increasing, from both primary and secondary sources, in Germany and worldwide. Our research efforts at the IAM focus on intelligent machines that help satisfy those needs in the future – sustainably as well as energy-efficiently!

An estimated 7% of the electric power produced worldwide is utilized for comminution processes. Only about 1% of the energy converted by a crusher serves to create new surfaces, i.e. the actual material comminution.

At the Institute of Mineral Processing Machines (IAM), our research focus lies in more energy-efficient machines and ways to process raw materials. On the basis of a well-founded investigation into material properties down to the microscopic level, we develop ideas and solutions for improved, or completely new machine concepts. Energy efficiency and a sustainable utilization of resources are not in contradiction to, but rather depend on economic efficiency and performance – and vice versa!
