Sustainability as a principle of action meets us daily, in the media coverage and in discussions with family, friends and acquaintances. After 70 years of existence, the organizers of the Berg und Hüttenmännische Tage (BHT) have dedicated themselves to the topic this year: The conference will take place from June 5th to 7th under the title “Sustainable Processes for Innovative Material Design”.
As part of the three event days, the PhD Council (ProRat) of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg is organizing its PhD Colloquium in the Neue Mensa on June 6th. As a keynote speaker Seraya Bock from the real laboratory “Climate-neutral living in Berlin” of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research e.V. (PIK) will speak. In his lecture “Just save the world with consumption !?” KliB – Living climate neutral in Berlin: Perspectives and pitfalls of climate-friendly consumption “, the environmental ethicist and scientific staff at PIK will present both the real laboratory and practical tips for everyday life.
Afterwards, doctoral candidates from different faculties and institutes of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg will present their research related to the topic of sustainability. These include, for example, “Recycling of spheroidized graphite from spent lithium ion batteries” by Anna Vanderbruggen, “Thermoelectric chalcogenides for waste heat recovery” by Paweł Wyźga or Martin Kofi Mensah’s “A Review of the Socio-Environmental Impact Assessment of Artisanal and Small-scale Mining Operations in Western Ghana”. The program is supplemented with selected posters of the young scientists.

The Humboldt Year 2019 is at the same time the 70th anniversary of the BHT Conference Freiberg and within this framework our PhD Colloquium celebrates its fourth anniversary. Therefore this seems to be the right time for a review of the last three events:
The first PhD Colloquium took place in 2016 as an initiative of the PhD Council in cooperation with the GraFa within the 67th BHT Conference under the title “Moments of Finding”.
After the usual welcoming ceremony and an extremely informative keynote speech by Dipl. Wirtsch.-Ing. Tom Hänel on “Industry 4.0”, a total of 10 further PhD candidates presented contents from their doctoral projects in the 15+5 principle. Another keynote after the lunch break by mathematician Dr. Roh Pin Lee about the hot topic “Publish or perish? – Making the most of our PhD and academic experience”, as well as a BBQ and Get-Together event in the evening completed the day.
Although the BHT was originally founded 70 years ago as the “Mining and Metallurgy Day” for scientific exchange on resource-related topics, one cannot find this focus in our colloquia – quite analogous to today’s BHT concept, which increasingly focuses on interdisciplinary and internationally networked research.
At our first colloquium, not only PhD candidates from the fields of drilling technology and mineralogy, but also from mathematics, chemistry, economics and electronics/sensor materials were involved. The proportion of international participants was as high as 80%!
The second PhD Colloquium with the topic “Secret of Science” followed in 2017. As keynotes, we were again able to attract prominent people from science and industry: Prof. Biermann from TU Freiberg, Richard Stanulla from GEOWiD GmbH, Augusto Mosqueda from Tonámix Renovables (Mexico) and Rüdiger Grimm from geoENERGIE Konzept informed the audience about the implementation of current research results in the field of energy conversion in various areas of the industry. In addition to the Get-Together BBQ in the evening, the participants also had the opportunity to present their research results on posters in a special “poster mile” (see picture) and to exchange ideas in exciting panel discussions after each presentation block.
Last year we were able to implement this successful concept for the third time in cooperation with the VMPV, this time with the focus on “The social responsibility of science and scientist”. The conference was actually able to justify this title: With keynotes by Dr. Büttner of Transparency International and presentations on fair resource extraction in Kenya, biodiversity in former mining sites and the intelligent use of fossil substances for new materials, the participants were able to prove their rhetoric skills.
