Travel to the conference site

By car you can reach the venue via the A17 motorway exit ā€œPirna/ Bad Schandauā€. Then follow the road B172 for approx. 20 km towards direction Bad Schandau. You can park your car free of charge directly near the Elbe river below the conference hotel (see map). A permission you will receive at the reception of the hotel. Alternatively, you can use the garage of the conference hotel (fees apply) or one of the various parking possibilities in the city.

Map Parking

By train you can reach Bad Schandau via the Bad Schandau National Park Station. The ECs of the Hamburg-Berlin-Prague line stop here four times a day. There is a semi-hour train connection to Dresden. The approximate travel time from Berlin airport is 2.5 h, from Prague airport 3 h and from Dresden airport 1.5 h. If you arrive by train, you have to cross the Elbe river to get to the hotel. You can do this either talking the ferry (preferred as the ferry goes directly from the station to the hotel) or by walking across the bridge (about 30 min) or by taking a bus.

Excursion:

All participants of the GADEST 2024 will be invited for an excursion on Wednesday, 11 September, starting at 10:30 from the hotel entrance (or at least nearby). Three buses will take the guests to the tourist spot in Saxon Switzerland called Bastei Bridge. One of the photos of the location was used as the top image for the conference web pages.

During the bus trip, the participants will be informed about the history and significance of the location.  On top of the mountain, the official program includes taking a conference photo (at 11:00) on the bridge and a light lunch in the cafeteria (11:30 – 13:30). You may walk around the place, look for souvenirs, visit the ancient museum and take photos. A group of guests, who are capable of walking down the mountain for about 1h will start a hiking tour from the Bastei to the village Kurort Rathen at 13:30 under the guidance of our colleagues. Others will take busses to Stadt Wehlen at 13:30 and take the steam boat from there at 14:30. The walkers will join the steam boat in Kurort Rathen at 15:00, so that all participants will be invited to the boat trip along the Elbe river back to the conference hotel.

Please be aware that the hiking route, although specially built, requires some effort. If you do not feel confident walking about 1.5 km down the hill, please use the bus instead! We will walk a part of this hiking route downhill (site in german), namely the part near the river Elbe (in the discription uphill).
Please inform the stuff during the registration if you will take a walk or use the bus.

The participants will return to the hotel at about 17:00.
