Additive Manufacturing of Glass

The fabrication of glass objects having complex shapes with advanced functionalities is not realized due to materials and technological limitations, and there is an unmet need for new fabrication processes for making functional glass objects.

The most innovative and modern shaping technology of the 21st century is additive manufacturing, colloquially named “3D printing”. However, 3D printing of glassy objects is still very challenging. Due to the broad range of additive manufacturing techniques and the high variety of glass systems and compositions as well as the diversity in applications for 3D printed glassy parts, different approaches and research and development strategies are followed.

Within the Colloquium, the exchange of research results and technological development advances in Additive Manufacturing of Glass is organized in a hybrid talk session.

After a joint lunch break and visits to the Additive Manufacturing laboratories at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, a workshop on challenges and issues of 3D printing of glass will be held in the afternoon. There, the participants will try to identify correlation and dependencies of printing technologies, parameters and resulting glass properties. The outcome of the workshop is intended to be incorporated into a joint manuscript for publication in “Glass Europe”[1] open access journal, co-authored by all active participants.
