Are you German and currently based in the US or are you an American who has lived in Germany? Would you like to share your experience about life in Germany and engage American students on German culture and language? Then join us for our nationwide Meet-a-German* campaign to kick off Deutschlandjahr USA 2018-19 in your own community.

The German-American Fulbright Commission and the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) invite you to celebrate and promote German culture in American primary and secondary classrooms on October 3, 2018 – Day of German Unity.

You can serve as a citizen ambassador leading fun and interactive classroom or outdoor activities focused on Germany at a school in your community. It’s a great opportunity to share your intercultural experience with young students and spark their interest in Germany. Help us meet our goal of organizing Meet-a-German* events in 500 schools across the USA!

There are two ways for you to get involved:
Be a speaker! We will provide you with ideas and materials to plan your own Meet-a-German* activity. You will find downloadable materials, including classroom activities, worksheets, games, songs, and presentations on Germany on our website in September. We will also provide you with giveaways for students.
You may determine how much time you spend at the school event. You may plan to visit several classes within a school or more than one school.

If you already have contacts at a local school, please share your plans with us. If you would like to participate but do not have a particular school in mind, we will connect you with a school in your vicinity.

Be a host! If you are interested in hosting a Meet-a-German* event in your child’s school, we will work on connecting you with a speaker near you. We also encourage you to spread the word to other potential hosts in your network to participate.

Please respond to our questionnaire by August 15 and become a host or a speaker. Once you have submitted your information, we will get in touch with you.

Deutschlandjahr USA

Meet-a-German* is a joint initiative of the German-American Fulbright Commission and the Association of American Teachers of German. It is part of the Year of German American Friendship 2018/19, a comprehensive and collaborative campaign initiated by the German Federal Foreign Office and the Goethe-Institut, and supported by the Federation of German Industries (BDI). This campaign will showcase how closely the two countries are linked by heritage, common values, and shared interests.
