Content description

This course is aimed at anyone who has not had much experience with statistical analysis or who is unsure about the correct procedures for planning, conducting, and evaluating experiments. General principles of statistics, the most common statistical topics such as t-tests, outlier tests, p-values, confidence intervals, ANOVA, and case number determinations, are discussed both formally and with practical relevance through joint exercises. Since these principles apply in all scientific fields, all topics can be addressed both generally and specifically by each participant, thus teaching an understanding of these topics and the connections between them in an ideal and interactive way.

Learning objectives, content, methods

The course covers:
• Variability as the basis of statistics
• Properties of samples
• Significance tests, p-values, confidence intervals, their advantages and disadvantages
• Dealing with outliers
• Optimizing experiments (sample size, statistical power)
• How to read a scientific paper, data presentation (error bars)
• Introduction to Design of Experiments (DoE) as part of ANOVA
• Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)
