The Center for Water Research Freiberg (ZeWaF) invites all interested students, researchers, and staff to two Birdsall-Dreiss/Lamoreaux lectures by Prof. Michael Sukop on groundwater dynamics, sea-level rise, and the Biscayne Aquifer.
13:15–14:15 : A Bellwether for Change: Groundwater and Sea Level Rise in Southeast Florida
17:30–18:30 : The Enigmatic Biscayne Aquifer: Field, Laboratory, and Computational Approaches
The Birdsall-Dreiss/LaMoreaux Distinguished Lectureship is an internationally recognized lecture series in hydrogeology, organized by the Hydrogeology Division of the Geological Society of America. It honors outstanding contributions to groundwater science and supports visits by distinguished hydrogeologists to universities and research institutions worldwide.
Prof. Michael Sukop is Professor of Hydrogeology in the Department of Earth and Environment and the Institute of Environment at Florida International University. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, a licensed professional geologist, and a certified hydrogeologist in California. His research focuses on critical groundwater issues in Southeast Florida, including saltwater intrusion, groundwater inundation, septic systems, injection wells, and the hydrogeology of the Biscayne Aquifer. He has extensive expertise in groundwater and solute transport modeling, co-authored Version 4 of the widely used SEAWAT model for seawater intrusion, and has authored and co-authored two books on Lattice Boltzmann computational fluid dynamics modeling. His team is currently implementing the coastal subsurface monitoring network for Southeast Florida.
