Content
Presenting information graphically in a way that is easy to read and understand allows the audience to focus on the speaker’s content or speech, making their presentation much easier to comprehend. This workshop will introduce concepts and techniques to enhance graphics, utilize the best presentation and explain in detail what type of presentation will best allow your audience to intuitively understand your message. This not only helps the audience to better connect with you (the presenter) and your research, but also saves you the time and effort of having to explain every detail of your visualizations. It’s all about directing your audience’s attention through the intelligent use of shapes, colors, labels and the right graphics. Bar charts are not always the best way to show differences. But are pie charts the best way to show proportions? Which other diagrams can you use in which situation?
Methods
- What kind of graphics / charts exist and which are particularly suitable for which situations / contexts
- How do I use shapes, color, size, labels effectively, how do I “streamline” my graphics
- How does our brain process (graphical) information and how can we use this evolutionary way to design effective graphics?
- ways to optimize graphics to tell scientific stories that make our lectures, posters or presentations even more exciting
- possible workflows to apply techniques from this in Microsoft excel
Learning Objectives
In this workshop, we will learn to use graphical representations elegantly and intuitively to make speeches or presentations better and easier to understand while still having all the important information available so that your audience can follow without distractions and effort. Applying the techniques would be a win-win situation for you and your audience.
