Get to know the information boards about the universal element carbon simply from home and learn how to reduce CO2 emissions, produce “green” fuels and extract new products from waste.

The CampusTag (open day) on January 9th offered valuable information and exciting experiments.
For the Institute of Energy Process Engineering and Chemical Engineering (IEC), M.Sc. Michaela Nguyen and M.Sc. Philip Rößger were on site, answering your questions and helding many consultations about the choice of study location and subject.
Of particular interest was the new hands-on experiment “A fluidized bed you can touch”, which illustrates the principle of fluidization. In a box full of sand, a fluidized bed is created with the help of pressurized air. Now, the solid behaves like a liquid. This phenomenon has a lot of advantages in technical applications due to the good mass and heat transfer.

Plastics have become an essential part of our lives. The packaging of our food is made of it just like everyday objects such as smartphones, cars and clothing. They are incredibly flexible in their application and also have useful properties: light, malleable, stable, waterproof and comparatively cheap. But we buy these big advantages at the expense of our environment.
Not only that a lot of CO2 is produced in the production of plastic, which accelerates climate change due to the greenhouse effect. Large quantities of plastics also end up in the environment, where they pollute seas and landscapes. But how do we get out of the plastic crisis without having to completely ban plastics?
Precisely on this topic, process engineer Florian Keller gave a lecture to pupils in the 8th and 10th grade at the Gymnasium Marienberg on November 13th, 2019. The students learned a lot about plastic waste and how it has been handled so far. He also presented the research field of chemical recycling: Here, waste that has been incinerated and thus emitted large amounts of CO2 can be processed into new products.

On October 10th, 2019 our Czech project partners from the Lignite Research Institute (VÚHU) in Most and from the University of Chemistry and Technology Prague (VŠCHT) visited us in Freiberg in order to plan the events for 2020 together.
From excursions to CampusDay to Pupil’s univeristy – there will be many exciting offers for you again. You can inform yourself about the topics energy and environment as well as learn a lot about material and energy conversion, for example how to get from petroleum to gasoline or from hops, malt and water to beer.
